Do we have Leaders or Representatives?

Wed 27 July 2016

In the current political scene, presidential candidates are choosing their slogans, their dresses, their timings and their stand on key issues based on what people vote for. If every choice that a politician makes is to please public who voted for him, are we better off replacing politician with a AI based system that “represents” our interests in the hall of democracy? Hoping that the politician should do everything that the people want him to is exactly that. Most people have a surface level understanding of issues, and are primarily driven by emotions more than a rational mindset. Representatives are good for the short term, which is what most people would optimize for when taking decisions. Leaders, at least the good ones, on the other hand, are good for the long term. I, for one, would hope that the candidate I vote for is better informed and more motivated than I am, to solve the complex societal challenges that we face. From this perspective, I see a lot of representatives but no leaders.
